Dirty Library Carpet Facts

It's a known fact that almost all libraries are carpeted. Having carpets in this environment is useful in a number of ways. They provide a natural sound dampener and prevent slips to name some examples. When there is a high amount of traffic the carpets get dirty in interesting ways.

In the course of a year, a new carpet will half its weight in dirt deposited in it from regular use. This leads to discoloration on the surface that is especially visible when the carpet is just one color. Dark multi-colored carpets won't make this as obvious compared to regular carpet with one color.

The discoloration patterns can tell you interesting details about customer activity. For instances, patches of discoloration will show you where customers stand the most often. This correlates with large dirt deposits in those sections of the carpet. The library carpet is often darker at the kiosks, self-checkouts and popular bookshelves.

The other obvious areas of dirt in a library carpet are at the entrances and exits. This occurs since people wipe their feet there upon entering the library.  To offset the dirt settling an entrance mat is usually placed on top of the carpet the entrance.
